DDay 75 Portsmouth

D-Day 75 – Portsmouth

The 75th Anniversay of D-Day

The events in Portsmouth for the 75th D-Day told the stories of those that fought the oppressors for the freedom of others. In this first post we focus on the main event, and a very well organised event it was too. Security was tight; as to be expected when leaders from nations around the world and our own Queen are visiting to pay their respect and celebrate, also including attendance by Donald Trump and his entourage. The event was well attended and friendly despite the difficulties in getting in due to there being only one entrance to the whole common with very tight security controls. It was fast, efficient and friendly and I didn’t hear of any problems, so all good.

D-Day 75 Main Event

The performance on the stage was very well planned. Actors portrayed the events leading up to the big day with screens and effects depicting the troops movements. Speeches by Prime Minister Theresa May and the Queen were considerate and on topic without any other hidden agenda. Maximum respect was given to those that fought for others freedom, especially when D-Day veteran John Jenkins was given a chance to speak on the stage. He was so relaxed and humorous that he perhaps didn’t realise the size of his audience!

Military Display - DDay Portsmouth

A Naval vessel in the solution sounded a gun salute to mark the end of the speeches and Sheridan Smith sang We’ll Meet Again to an Orchestra and a military plan fly past featuring new and old fighters and bombers. The Red Arrows made the final pass over the veterans leaving a red, white and blue trail.
Later in the afternoon the red arrows were back to give a full performance to the onlookers, the VIP barriers now down and allowed to watch from the beach.
Later that evening the veterans departed to Normandy, just as they would have 75 years ago but this time in style; on Fred Olsen cruise ship Boudicca. They were escort by a UK and Canadian Navy Frigates and 4 small patrol boats. The shore lines, Old Portsmouth Walls, Still and West Pub and Spice Island in were packed full of well wishes to send them on their way.
The events are not over yet, this was just day one! Today the dignitaries, veterans and so focus is on Normandy, just as it would have been 75 years ago. On Saturday and Sunday Southsea and surrounding areas will be open with a huge celebration event.  For your information here is a full event guide with maps and times
